Our own coopers repair these ex-bourbon casks so that they impart a smooth and mellow vanilla flavour into the resting malt whisky. Why's it so mellow? Well, for starters, there’s not a single drop of grain whisky in our Monkey Shoulder, and the chosen malts mature in first fill ex-bourbon casks. Making Monkey Shoulder: One day, our legendary Malt Master David Stewart decided to create the world’s first 'triple' malt, by combining single malts from three of Speyside’s finest distilleries.
Today, the name Monkey Shoulder lives on as an affectionate tribute, to honour the hard graft of all the maltmen past and present. Whilst our maltmen are among the few who still turn the barley manually, working conditions have changed which means this injury has been consigned to the past. It had a tendency to cause their arm to hang down a bit like a monkey’s, so they nicknamed it 'monkey shoulder'. It’s a reference to a condition that maltmen sometimes picked up while working long shifts, turning the barley by hand. I paired the Monkey Shoulder blended malt with some Caramello chocolate, and you can see the results over HERE."The term 'monkey shoulder' harks back to our whisky making heritage. I have managed to get my hands on the Kininvie 17 yo too now I have all 3 distilleries that make up this dram. During December, when I make cocktails, this will unquestionably feature quite prominently on my cocktail menu. This Monkey Shoulder is a brilliant blend of exceptional whiskies that is great on its own but will also make an excellent base for cocktails. It is beautiful and warming with notes of spice and hints of caramelized nuts. It is a very easy drinking whisky, and you certainly want a second glass.įINISH: Medium long. There are subtle notes of barley, cereals and spices mixed with honey sweetness and vanilla. The Monkey Shoulder has a creamy feel on the palate. PALATE: The palate is wonderfully smooth. Oak and cereals float past, and with the addition of a bit of water, there are hints of fresh cut-flowers. There are some toffee and vanilla notes in the background. But the fact that it was a blended whisky combining 2 of our favourite distilleries ( The Balvenie and Glenfiddich) was the reason why we bought it in the first place.Ībout 10% of our collection is made up of whisky from The Balvenie and Glenfiddich distilleries. It even took home a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirit Awards 2013. Jim Murray awarded the Monkey Shoulder whisky an impressive 93 points in his Whisky Bible. They represent the three distilleries used in manufacture. Monkey Shoulder also has a distinctive trio of metal monkeys on the shoulder of the bottle. Turning the barley by hand is a relatively ancient practice, though the Balvenie maltmen still keep the tradition alive. It happens due to the repetitive bending and turning of the barley by hand. A monkey shoulder is a painful (albeit temporary) ligament strain injury to the shoulder. They choose a curious name for this blended whisky. While featuring computer-controlled distillation, it lacks its own mash house. The distillery was built on the grounds of the Balvenie distillery and consisted only of a still house. The Kininvie distillery is one of the youngest distilleries in Scotland.
The blend is then further aged before being bottled. All three are aged in first-fill bourbon casks before being blended in small batches (27 casks at a time). It’s made with malt from the company’s three Dufftown distilleries, namely Glenfiddich the malty, honeyed whisky from The Balvenie and finally, Kininvie. Created by Speyside legends William Grant & Sons, Monkey Shoulder whisky is a blended malt whisky.
